Piriformis Lateral Hip Rotation (External Hip Rotation)

Return to Muscles Chart Lower Extremity

Piriformis Lateral Hip Rotation is its action described as:

Prime Mover of Lateral Rotation (External Rotation) of the Femur at the hip Joint

Synergists: assist in performing the action of Lateral (External) hip Rotation

  • Piriformis
  • Gemellus Superior
  • Obturator Internus
  • Gemellus Inferior
  • Obturator Externus
  • Quadratus Femoris
  • Gluteus Maximus
  • Sartorius
  • Posterior fibers of Gluteus Medius
  • Biceps Femoris (long head)
  • Adductor Magnus (posterior head)

Fixators or Stabilizers:  These muscles maintain dynamic control to allow for lateral or external rotation of the hip

  • Rectus Abdominus
  • Internal and External Obliques
  • Quadratus Lumborum
  • Erector Spinae
  • Deep Rotators of the Hip
  • Gulteus Medius
  • Gulteus Minimus

Antagonist: Muscles that perform the opposite action to the agonist in this case Piriformis & Lateral (External) Rotation of the Hip

  • Gluteus Medius (anterior fibers)
  • Gluteus Minimus
  • Tensor Fascia Latae
  • Semimembranosus
  • Semitendinosus
  • Anterior Adductors
